The 4th edition of the Coosa River Basin Initiative—Redmond Regional Medical Center 7 Hills 3 Rivers Adventure Race will feature a special run-bike-paddle-swim (and slog) challenge for children and their parents on Saturday, Sept. 24, in Downtown Rome.

The 7 Hills 3 Rivers Adventure Race Family Challenge will take parent-child racing teams across six miles of river, riverfront trails and hidden wetlands in downtown Rome.

The course includes a one mile paddle, a one mile run, a four-mile bike ride and a cross-river swim.

The Family Challenge will kick off following the start of the adults’ 7 Hills 3 Rivers Adventure Race—a grueling course that ascends all seven of Rome’s famous hills and traverses all three of the town’s rivers. When racers complete the course they will have traveled at least five-miles on foot, 12 miles by bike and four miles in canoes or kayaks.

“Most of the participants in our adult race are kids at heart,” said Sarah Husser, race coordinator, “so this year we decided to let the real kids get muddy and wet too—and bring their parents along for the adventure.”

Participants should expect to get wet and muddy, according to race organizers.

The course includes crossings of creeks and rivers and a muddy slog through a swamp. Race teams will also face mystery events, including challenges involving moving bricks

provided by General Shale and tires from OTR Wheel Engineering.

Last year, more than 140 racers participated in the adult race. Organizers hope to have more than 200 racers this year. Registration fees are $60 per person for the adult race and $37 per person for the Family Challenge. Registration fees increase by $10 after Sept. 5.

Racers may participate as solos, tandem or three-person teams. Children participating in the Family Challenge must be accompanied by at least one parent or other adult guardian.

Information, course descriptions and online registration details can be found

In the Family Challenge, awards will be presented to win-ners in 7-9-year-old and the 10-14 year-old age divisions. In the adult race, awards will be presented to the fastest finishers in men’s, women’s and co-ed three-person divisions as well as in tandem and solo divisions.

“This is not your father’s race,” Husser said. “If you’re used to staying on a paved path, you’ll be in for a shock. But, along the way you’ll get to see portions of Downtown Rome, you never knew existed.”

Redmond Regional Medical Center is serving as the pre-senting sponsor of the event.

Other sponsors include State Mutual Insurance, OTR Wheel, Advanced Rehabilitation, General Shale Brick, Harbin Clinic, Cycle Therapy, Dixie Homecrafters, Cedar Creek Park, Big Peach Running Co. and Just Sports & Tennis.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Coosa River Basin Initiative and will be used to protect our drinking water sources in North America’s most biologically diverse river basin.
