The Coosa River Basin Initiative (CRBI), along with the 180-member Georgia Water Coalition (GWC), invites citizens to participate in Capitol Conservation Day Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta.
To Participate, call CRBI at 706-232-2724, e-mail Joe Cook at jcook@coosa.org, or Register Online
The Day includes a legislative breakfast sponsored by Georgia Conservation Voters (GCV) with addresses by key members of Georgia’s General Assembly, a legislation and issues briefing session for citizens, visits with local legislators and a press conference sponsored by GWC.“This is an opportunity for ordinary citizens to “lobby” their legislators in person,” said Joe Cook, Executive Director & Riverkeeper at CRBI. “Legislators will tell you that hearing from their constituents does make a difference.”
The day kicks off with the GCV breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the Sloppy Floyd Veteran Memorial Building in Atlanta. Tickets to the breakfast are $25. Reserve your tickets online! at the Georgia Conservation Voters website.
The remaining events are free to participants and begin at 9 a.m. with a briefing session immediately following the breakfast at the Sloppy Floyd Building. This session will update citizens on current legislation before the General Assembly and show them how to find and talk to their legislators during the session. Participants will then visit the Capitol to talk with legislators. A press conference is also planned for 2 p.m.
CRBI and the GWC are tracking numerous pieces of legislation this session, including provisions to change the way Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division issues fines to violators of clean water laws, an initiative to introduce non-native fish into Georgia waters and a measure to address state fees collected for the purposes of cleaning up hazardous waste sites and disposing of old tires.
